How PornDB works: preview images, prdb.net metadata and your own indexers
A walkthrough of PornDB: how releases are collected and matched to videos, how search stays fast and private, and what you need to download.
PornDB at app2.porndb.me looks simple from the outside: a grid of videos, some filters and a list of releases under each video. This post explains what happens behind that grid, so you know what to expect from the results and why some things work the way they do.
Three ingredients
PornDB combines three sources of information:
- The prdb.net catalog. prdb.net is a database of adult videos with actors, aliases, sites, networks, release dates and preview images. PornDB keeps a synchronised local copy of the parts it needs.
- NZB indexer entries. A separate collection service gathers new entries from supported Usenet indexers in the background. PornDB copies that metadata into its own database on a schedule.
- Your account. Which indexers you have connected, your preferences, and optionally your personal prdb.net key for favourites and membership.
Matching releases to videos
The interesting part is the matching. Release names on Usenet follow loose conventions: a site name, a date, sometimes a scene title, a resolution, a group tag. PornDB works through an ordered set of rules, from exact release names confirmed by PreDB down to site-and-date combinations, and only links a release to a video when the evidence is unambiguous. The goal is precision: a release that cannot be matched with confidence stays unmatched rather than being guessed. Matching runs every few minutes, so new releases appear shortly after they are collected.
The result is the main Discover view: one card per video, with preview image, actors, site and release date. Open a card and you see every release of that video from the indexers you can access, each with its own indexer, size, resolution and publication date. Two releases of the same scene are never merged into one.
Filters that actually help
Because everything is local, you can combine filters freely:
- Actor and site, including aliases, so a performer’s alternative names lead to the same profile.
- Resolution, from 360p up to 4K and 8K. Picking several resolutions shows videos that have a release in any of them.
- Release date range and newest or oldest first.
- Indexer, if you only want results from one of your connections.
- Favourite actors and sites, once you connect a personal prdb.net key.
Each actor has a profile page that shows what is available from your indexers right now.
Raw search: when there is no match yet
Not every release can be matched, especially brand-new ones or content that is not in the catalog. The Releases view searches all locally collected indexer entries by name, matched or not. You can narrow it to confirmed matches with one switch.
Keep in mind that raw search covers what has been collected, not the entire history of an indexer or of Usenet.
Indexers: integrated and personal
NZBPorn is integrated. Every confirmed account can browse its releases without connecting anything and without a personal key.
Other indexers, such as NZBFinder and DrunkenSlug, are personal connections. You have three options per indexer:
- Connect with your API key. The key is stored encrypted, and the connection is active at once.
- Test mode. Connect without a key to browse that indexer’s releases before you decide. Downloads from it stay disabled until you add a key.
- Pause or remove a connection at any time. Access to its releases stops immediately; removing it also deletes the stored key.
PornDB does not test your key against the indexer. If a download fails at the indexer, the key or your plan there is the first thing to check. More on this in Connecting your NZB indexers to PornDB.
Why search is fast and private
Search, filters and browsing never query an indexer or the prdb.net API while you click around. All of that runs against data that was collected in scheduled background jobs. That keeps pages quick and means the indexers do not see what you are looking at.
Your personal indexer key is used for exactly one thing: building the download link that your browser opens at the indexer. PornDB does not send it anywhere else.
Downloading
Browsing, previews and search are free. Every download requires an active prdb.net membership. The app checks it through your personal prdb.net connection and shows the status under Settings → prdb.net → Membership. If something is missing, the download button stays clickable and tells you exactly what to fix.
- NZBPorn downloads go through PornDB itself. Fair-use limits apply per account (for example 50 files per hour and 200 per day), and your remaining allowance is visible in settings.
- Downloads from other indexers use your own direct link, opened by your browser. Your plan at that indexer decides what you can fetch.
Coming from the old porndb.me?
