PornDB and prdb.net: how the two fit together

prdb.net is the catalog, PornDB is the discovery app on top. What each one does, why PornDB uses a prdb.net key, and where nzbporn.org comes in.

The names are similar enough to cause confusion, so here is how PornDB, prdb.net and nzbporn.org relate to each other.

prdb.net: the catalog

prdb.net is a database of adult videos. It knows which scenes exist, which site and network released them, when, which actors appear in them under which names, and it has preview images for them. It also offers a membership and a personal API key.

nzbporn.org: an indexer

nzbporn.org is a Usenet indexer for adult content. It tracks what is posted to Usenet and provides NZB files for those posts.

PornDB: the discovery app that joins them

PornDB sits on top of both. It keeps a local copy of the prdb.net catalog, collects entries from NZBPorn and other indexers, and matches the two. What you get is a browsable grid of real videos, each with the releases that exist for it on your indexers.

You can think of it as:

  • prdb.net answers “what is this scene?”
  • an indexer answers “where can I get a release of it?”
  • PornDB answers “what is new that I would like, and which release should I take?”

Why PornDB asks for your prdb.net key

You can create a PornDB account and browse without any prdb.net account. The catalog metadata is part of PornDB.

Your personal prdb.net key is optional and unlocks two things:

  1. Favourites. PornDB imports your favourite actors and sites from prdb.net and keeps them in sync, so you can filter the whole catalog by them.
  2. Downloads. Downloads in PornDB require an active prdb.net membership. PornDB checks it through your key and shows the status under Settings → prdb.net → Membership.

Why NZBPorn is built in

NZBPorn is the indexer PornDB is designed around. Its releases are available to every confirmed PornDB account without a personal key, and NZBPorn downloads are delivered by PornDB directly within fair-use limits.
